Digital marketing for a local business: where to start

The basics people search for, how to pick one or two channels, how to know what you want from each and the signs it is working.

Most small businesses do not need a big marketing plan. They need a handful of things working well, in the right order. This guide is for a local or regional business, such as a shop, clinic, studio or service company, and covers where to start with digital marketing and how to tell whether it works.

Start with the basics people search for

  1. Google Business Profile. Claim it, add your address, hours, phone, photos and services. This is what shows up when someone searches near you.
  2. A clear website. Even a few pages that say what you do, where, and how to contact you. See our guide on what a small business website needs.
  3. WhatsApp. A business number with a profile and catalogue, and a link customers can tap to message you.
  4. Reviews. Ask happy customers to leave a Google review, and reply to every one.

Then pick one or two channels

You cannot do everything well. Choose the places where your customers already are.

Know what you want from each one

Decide the goal before you spend: calls, WhatsApp messages, store visits, form submissions or orders. Then check each week how many you got, and from where. Add a different phone number, link or offer code for each channel if you need to tell them apart.

Content that earns attention

Signs it is working

If after a few months you cannot answer these, simplify and track better before spending more.
