A multi-vendor marketplace is a website or app where many sellers list their products and customers buy from any of them in one place. Think of a local craft marketplace, a wholesale portal for distributors, or a regional store where shop owners sell side by side. It is a bigger project than a single online store, and the hard part is rarely the software. This guide covers what you need to decide before you build one.
How a marketplace differs from a store
- Two kinds of users. Sellers who list and fulfil orders, and buyers who browse and pay.
- You are the middle. You set the rules, take a commission or fee, and handle disputes.
- Money moves between parties. Payments are collected and then split between sellers and you.
- The catalogue is not yours. Quality depends on what sellers upload.
Questions to answer first
- Who are the sellers, and why would they list with you instead of selling alone?
- Who are the buyers, and why would they come to you?
- How will you earn: a commission on each sale, a listing fee, a subscription, or a mix?
- Who ships the goods: each seller, or you?
- How are returns, refunds and complaints handled?
- Which area or category will you start with?
What the platform needs
- Seller sign-up, approval and a simple way to add and manage products.
- A buyer storefront with search, categories, cart and checkout.
- Online payments, with a way to settle money to sellers and keep your commission.
- Order tracking for buyers, sellers and you.
- An admin panel to approve sellers, manage listings, handle disputes and see reports.
- Notifications by email, SMS or WhatsApp.
The chicken-and-egg problem
Buyers will not come without products, and sellers will not list without buyers. Most marketplaces solve it by starting narrow: one city, one category or one community, with a small group of sellers you personally bring on. Grow from there, once orders are flowing.
Rules and paperwork to check
- How payments to sellers are handled, and what your payment provider allows.
- Tax rules for marketplace operators and sellers, including GST. Ask your chartered accountant.
- Terms for sellers and buyers, and a clear returns policy.
- Rules on what may and may not be sold.
Build from scratch or start from a platform?
Building a marketplace from nothing takes time. Starting from a working platform that you then brand and adjust gets you live sooner, and lets you test the idea before you invest in every feature.
